Meghan Duggan Headshot.jpg

A native of Danvers, Massachusetts, Meghan Duggan has achieved incredible success at all levels of her hockey career. Meghan graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Biology, where she won three NCAA Championships, led the Nation in scoring, and is the all-time leader in career points, a precursor to her success with Team USA.

+ MEGHAN'S BIO

Meghan Duggan is a pioneer not only for women in hockey, but for women everywhere. Within her hockey career, Meghan has achieved sustained success at all levels in international and collegiate play and continues to be a role model both on and off the ice. She is a true professional who will always go the extra mile to make a difference, and is eager to continue learning and developing into the leader she is destined to be. When Jim was presented with the opportunity to work with Meghan, he knew he could not pass it up. Her background and experience bring an entirely different perspective to Gold Medal Strategies and we are so proud to have her as part of the team.

Meghan has won three Olympic medals during her Team USA Career, including the first U.S. Olympic Gold in 20 years when she led the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team as Captain at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. As a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team since 2007, Meghan is tied for the second most won IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championships of all-time, with her record of seven. Professionally, Meghan has been a three-time All-Star in the two women’s leagues in the U.S. (NWHL) and Canada (CWHL), a two-time Clarkson Cup Champion while playing for the Boston Blades of the CWHL, and a two-time Isobel Cup Finalist while playing in the NWHL for the Buffalo Beauts and the Boston Pride. Off the ice, Meghan successfully led a strike by the 2016-17 U.S. Women’s National Team against their national governing body, USA Hockey, for the Gender Equitable Treatment of their team in advance of the 2017 IIHF Women’s World Championship. This led to her team’s reception of the 2018 Sports Humanitarian Award, where ESPN noted, “The 2017-18 U.S. Women’s National Ice Hockey Team ignited a powerful movement, inspiring future generations of women and girls across this nation, empowering them to rise and speak out against inequality.” Further, the U.S. Olympic Women’s Team was nominated for Three 2018 ESPYS Awards, including the “Best Olympic Moment,” “Best Game,” and “Best Team.” Upon beating the 2017 World Series and the 2018 Rose Bowl in earning “Best Game,” Meghan proudly accepted the award on behalf of her teammates.

Meghan continues to leverage her experience charitably, through lending her voice to anti-bullying causes around the nation and through her appointment to the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) Board of Directors and membership of their Advisory Panel. With this group, Meghan has played a key role in a variety of initiatives and events surrounding girls and women in sports, as a keynote speaker and panel contributor on topics around gender equality, female empowerment, and using your voice to speak out against injustices in work and life.

MEGHAN’S SPEECH OFFERINGS

+ TEAMS

There is never one right way to lead a team or manage a group of people, as working with a variety of personalities requires continual adaptation and readjustment of our leadership techniques. Having been elected captain on nearly every team she has ever been on, including the 2014 and 2018 Olympic Teams, Meghan Duggan has successfully navigated through the highs and lows of all sort of leadership challenges, and has learned the key traits necessary in any position of power: be honest, have integrity and humility, and remain confident and comfortable with not always being liked by everyone. Through her conversation with you, Meghan will discuss how to develop these skills within yourselves as leaders, how to steer your team through difficult situations, and importantly, how to find ways to anticipate the need for and initiate change within a team when they need it the most, helping them to transform while reinventing best practices. Engage with Meghan to improve your own leadership abilities while learning how to lead your team to rediscover themselves in times of need.

+ FEMALE EMPOWERMENT/GENDER EQUALITY

As an incredible female leader in both the athletic and professional world, Meghan Duggan herself is an example of female empowerment in today’s world. She has impactfully lent her voice to this topic, in addition to gender equality, in many different industries. Most notably, Meghan led a successful strike by the 2017 US Women’s National Team vs USA Hockey for gender equitable treatment for women ahead of the 2017 World Championships, as explained on ESPN.com:

"The 2017-18 U.S. Women’s National Ice Hockey Team ignited a powerful movement, inspiring future generations of women and girls across this nation, and empowering them to rise and speak out against inequality. In March 2017, the team announced it would boycott the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship unless the players received increased training stipends and equal benefits to the men’s team. A successful resolution was reached just three days before the world championship. Players on the team put their careers, reputations and livelihoods on the line in order to fight for equitable support, and in the process, they reminded the entire nation that equality demands that women have equal standing in sports. Their tenacity flowed onto the ice as well, as the women went on to win gold against their rival Team Canada at the 2017 IIHF Women’s World Championship & at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games."

With great passion, Meghan will discuss her own experience as a woman in the workplace, and ways we can all help in reducing the gender gap, push for change, and empower women to stand up for what they believe in, promoting greater equality for our future.

+ CONFIDENCE

As an intangible concept, confidence is difficult to measure, but absolutely mandatory on the road to success. One of the most difficult lessons we will learn in life is that we cannot look for confidence strictly in external sources, such as our coaches, teammates, or parents. Rather, we need to build confidence within ourselves, to believe in ourselves more than anyone else in order to maximize our potential. Through her discussion with you, Meghan Duggan will explain ways to find the true belief in yourself and your abilities, and how to hold on to it. She will discuss how to build confidence within yourself through imagery and visualization, and emphasize that within teams and in business, preparation is the key to maintaining this confidence. Join us to learn how to evolve your own confidence, and how to ensure that this is contagious throughout your teams, driving you toward success.

+ TEAMWORK

Teamwork is difficult to master, as it requires contributions from every individual involved. Through her own extensive experience on and leading teams, Meghan Duggan has identified that having a team successfully work together is all about creating a thriving and sustainable culture – one that minimizes egos and values hard work, has a solid game plan/vision, has a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities, and is full of support from the leaders and all team members involved. As leaders, we must ensure that we embody this culture and build strong team communities, wherein every member of the team understands, trusts, and believes that each of them is part of something bigger than they are individually and is brought into the collective team goals. Join us and learn how to encourage positive teamwork within your organization, by leading through example and inspiring your team members to do the same.

+ RESILIENCE/OVERCOMING OBSTACLES

Resilience is one of the most challenging traits to develop, as when we are faced with obstacles, the easiest route is often to give up. However, we can learn mental toughness in overcoming difficulties that will propel us to a better and stronger future. Meghan Duggan has been through her share of major obstacles, including rebounding from several injuries throughout her career and losing two Olympic Gold Medal Games in a row in 2010 and 2014. Yet rather than letting any of these obstacles hold her back, Meghan persevered through every injury and found ways to transform the heartbreak following the two Olympic losses into a Gold Medal win in 2018. Through stories of her own experiences and trials and errors in overcoming, Meghan will teach you how to grow in your resilience and overcome any hurdle you encounter en route to your goals.

+ PERFORMING UNDER PRESSURE

Pressure is not the enemy; rather, when handled correctly, it can be the spark we need to achieve what we are capable of. In anticipation of being under pressure, we need to nurture our skills to ensure we do not react in a way that inhibits our performance. With an extensive history of performing successfully under pressure, be it making a play when the game was on the line, playing in front of tens of thousands of fans, or knowing the entire world was watching her game on TV, Meghan Duggan has learned some key techniques to ensure she is always playing to her potential. In Meghan’s experience, being able to block out distractions and focus on the big goal is one of the biggest tools in preparing for an Olympic game, and she will speak to how to bring this level of focus into your own high stakes moments. Further, Meghan will discuss the critical skills she nurtures to ensure success under pressure, including: preparation, positive imagery, breathing, and mental skills techniques that you too can nurture to manage you and your team’s performance at all times.

+ ACCOUNTABILITY AND RELIABILITY

As leaders and within teams, if we do not live the values of accountability and reliability we are not creating the framework for success. While they seem easy to achieve, many of us struggle with doing what we say we will do and encouraging our teams to do the same. Through conversation with you, Meghan Duggan will emphasize the importance of not only showing up on time and when you are called, but being prepared whenever you do so. Further, Meghan will highlight the significance of being honest and credible, and no matter our rank within a team, being a teammate that others can come to rely on no matter what the situation. Join us to learn how nurturing these two core values can create an indestructible framework for your team, and ways in which to influence your team members to develop them.

+ SETTING GOALS

Goals are our roadmaps to success, as without them, how can we know where we are heading? Meghan will explain how she has accomplished all that she has through clear goal setting, both small and big, long term and short term, and the importance of surrounding yourselves with people you trust to support you in achieving them, but will also challenge you along the way. Further, Meghan will emphasize the impact of writing down your goals and displaying them somewhere you can see every day, encouraging personal and group accountability as we strive to achieve all that we are capable of. Join us to grow in your own goal-setting capabilities and learn how to encourage the goal-oriented mindset within your teams.

+ STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS

We are always looking for one strategy for success, but the prescription is not the same for everyone, as every individual and team requires something a little bit different than the next. However, there are core strategies that do not fluctuate, and are requirements on the road to success. Meghan Duggan has learned these core priorities through years of experience, and will talk with you regarding how to grow and implement the strategies within yourselves and your teams, including but not limited to: work hard, be honest and have integrity, ask questions and don’t be afraid to be coached, have huge dreams, live outside your comfort zone, and built a tribe of family, mentors, friends, teammates and/or colleagues that you can trust and want to see you succeed as much as you do. Join us to hear more not only about the importance of these strategies, but how to combine them together to achieve all that you are capable of.
