If you watch TV footage of the celebration on the ice after Team USA beat the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid, you might see a smiling man with white hair give me a big hug.
A hero of mine, SSG Donald H. Denson II, Assistant Supply Sergeant of the 36th CAB S4 unit, grew up in TX loving hockey and our victory of lake placed made him a huge fan of the 1980 Olympic hockey team. This victory inspired Don to represent his country to help keep America safe. Donald and members of the F/1-171st General Support Aviation Battalion carried an American Medevac mission over the skies of Afghanistan in UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters when picking up wounded soldiers during Operation Enduring Freedom XII. When they returned they flew the flag representing every one of my teammates that was taken on each mission above the combat outpost they were stationed.
